Even when new you rarely saw the C30 on the left, or Lancer Sportback in front of me.

I’ve always actually liked the Lancer Sportback....they are very rare though!

When I was young my dad was looking for a replacement for his 2003 Impreza Wagon he bought new in late 2002. One of the cars we actually went and looked at was a Lancer Sportback Ralliart. Cool little car but he eventually decided we needed something a bit larger for hauling the family so he ended up buying a 2005 Legacy 2.5GT wagon. Still my favorite family car we have owned and favorite daily driver up until he bought his Series.Yellow (the Series.Yellow is actually the first new car he has bought since the 2003 Impreza).

The Volvo C30 was such a monumental disappointment to me. I absolutely love the looks of them. The lines are wonderful, and the interior is both comfortable and functional (albeit a little oddly mismatched color-wise in the one I tested). In some ways, it almost felt like a spiritual successor to the P1800. And then I drove one. The steering felt numb, the chassis understeers like crazy, and the whole driving experience feels more flaccid than what you would expect from a sporty hatchback.
Never driven a Lancer Sportback though. I’ve heard the Ralliart version is pretty fun. But yeah, never really see them anywhere.

Did you drive a base C30? Granted the one I drove is technically lowered, tuned, louder and has wider tires, but I really liked it.

It was a T5. Now, I will grant that I owned a Honda S2000 and Subaru SVX at the time, so obviously my expectations were skewed. But I was shopping for cars that could replace both my existing rides without giving up too much. I cross-shopped the C30 with the GTI, Cooper S, and WRX. All three of those felt like more complete enthusiast experiences.
What’s funny about it is that I wound up going in a completely different direction. Rather than replacing my two cars with one that could fit all necessary functions, I wound up with two even more nonsensical choices, a Land Rover and a ‘65 Mustang. I must have some form of automotive ADHD.

Well also to be fair, I was re-learning manual before I bought my Miata. Wasn’t pushing it, clearly.
But nice, on going a completely different route.
